Psychologist Edward Dolch gathered a list of the most commonly used English words by studying the most frequently occurring words in children’s books. These have been put together for teaching pre-reading abilities.
The list contains 220 “service words” with an additional 95 nouns. These words included in the list comprise 80% of the words you would usually find in a typical children’s book, and 50% found words that adults typically use or write. Once the student becomes familiar with this list of words, they develop reading skills much easier because they can then concentrate on the remaining words.
There is a total of 315 Dolch Sight Words. The words can be divided into groups by different levels or grades that range from early kindergarten to third grade, with a separate list of nouns.
